Synthetic materials

Synthetic fibres such as polyester, polyamide, acrylic and elastane are commonly used in modern garments to provide comfort, flexibility and durability. They are quick-drying and hard-wearing, but can release small plastic particles during washing that can end up in waterways and oceans. By taking care of your garments properly, you can both extend their lifespan and reduce their impact on the environment.

Washing synthetic garments

• Don’t wash unnecessarily – air or steam your garments between uses and spot treat stains to avoid unnecessary washes.
• Close zips and buttons before washing to reduce wear and tear.
• Fill the machine just right – avoid overfilling your laundry, it reduces friction that wears the fibres.
• Use a laundry bag like Guppyfriend to trap microfibres and protect the fabric.
• Avoid fabric softeners, which can coat the fibres and impair the performance of the material.

• Air dry whenever possible – it’s kinder to both the garment and the environment.

• Always follow the washing instructions and iron on a low heat if the material allows.

• Keep garments clean and completely dry to avoid odours and mould.
• Fold them carefully to keep their shape.
• Protect from direct sunlight to preserve colour and texture.

Tip: By airing, spot-treating and caring for your synthetic garments, you can reduce both the frequency of washing and microplastic emissions – while extending their lifespan.
